Spa Laa an der Thaya

In the 12th century, the village in the lowlands of Thaya was on a major road connecting the Danube on the south with the Czech countries in the north. Around the year 1190 the property  was taken from several farmers and later in 1230 Duke Leopold VI. established the town in the area. At the beginning of Habsburg rule Laa lost its importance. During the Thirty Years War meant Laa declined again, when in 1619 Czech groups settled the town for many months and economically exhausted it. With the end of World War I and the dissolution of the monarchy difficult times returned for Laa, because it suddenly became the border town, which was missing more and more important part of his background. After the Revolution in Eastern Europe and reopening the borders city got back on the rise. In 2002, spa area has been open.

Laa is located in the northern wine-growing region in Lower Austria and has been developed to the top center of the wine sector. Territory of the municipality covers 72.89 square kilometers, of which 2.87% are wooded areas. Laa lies near Thaya, but not on it. Only artificially created channel passes within the city.

Basis of the castle, remains of the town walls, the urban parish church and rectory, hospital and old town hall remained from early times of the history of the town.  For the 50th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I. a new town hall was built in the years 1898 – 1899. It acts spacious because of its form of construction typical for turn of centuries.

Laa has the connection to the rail to Vienna since 1869, known as the northern part of the eastern route, which was electrified in 2006. This lead to reduced time required to travel, as well as direct connection to the provincial capital. Laa is an important border crossing to the Czech Republic.
