Nature/Mountains Katschberg

Katschberg is part of the old road linking Radstadt - Obertauern (Radstadt´s gap in Tauris) - Lungau - Katschberg - Spittal on the Drava / Millstätter´s lake. Probably it was already used as the passage by Romans. In 1459 the "Upper Street" over Katschberg was firstly mentioned. Transport of the mail across the mountain was prooved after 1764. This place but wasnt founded by Romans. Sites showed the settlement here at least five centuries before the Romans came. Under the Romans the town was important - more houses were built, next to residential buildings also several pubs, shops, warehouses and also small spa, and even Mitrov temple.

Katschberg (Katschberghöhe - 1641 mabove sea level) associates Katschtal in Carinthia with the city Lungau in Salzburg. There is ski resort "ski swing" Katschberg Aineck situated around the pass. Road above the village leads from the village Rennweg near Katschberg through the pass to St. Michael in Lungau and to Hohe Tauern on the west and Lavant Alps on the east. Through the mountain-pass also crosses the border between the provinces of Carinthia and Salzburg .

Near the Castle Moosham where the northern border of Katschberg crosses lays a small village where passengers could recover and restock. There is also a small temple of Mitre cult located which was there a long time in contrast to Christianity. Not far from this place numerous Roman graves with ashe were also found, which were covered with stones.

In 1929 first restaurant was built in Katschberghöhe. In 1956 it was transformed to a four-star hotel by the new owners. Today there are many hotels and holiday apartments. In 1957, Matthias Bogensperger built the first ski lift on Tschaneck. The whole ski area was rebuilt within years from 1957 - 1997 to one of the largest private ski resort with 10 lifts. Today Katschberg-Aineck stretches with 16 lifts and 60 kmof slopes from Tschaneck (2024 m) via Aineck (2210 metersabove sea level) to the Holy Margaret in Lungau. In 2001, snowmaking system started its operation and the expansion and modernization of lifts  followed. Katschberg has also16 km long jogging track for sport skiers (1640-1750 m).
