Introduction

The City Liptovský Mikuláš is an administrative, economic, cultural and tourist center of the central Liptov. In winter, the city and its surroundings a paradise for downhill and cross country skiers and snowboarders, summer is a major tourism attraction for visitors.

History

The first written mention of the town dates back to 1286, although the city existed long before. The name is derived from the name of the patron church saint Mikuláš. City privileges acquired Liptovský Nicholas in the 14th century and the right to hold markets and fairs in the 15th century. Between 1677 to 1928 was based county of Liptov. The first county was mansion Illéshazyovský (now a museum Janka Kráľa). In 1713, it was judged legendary hero Juraj Janosik.

Location and climate

Liptovský Mikuláš lies in the middle of Liptov about 3 km from Liptovská Mara. From the north it is surrounded by powerful of Západné Tatry and Choc mountains from the southern to Nízke Tatry.

Tourist attractions

n town you can visit the Museum of Janko Kráľ, which is documented history of Liptovský Nicholas since 1286, and Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology, Liptovské museum or admire works of Slovak artists in the Gallery of PM Bohúň and Centre Koloman Sokol. All these monuments are concentrated in the historical center of city.

The surroundings of Liptovský Nicholas offers many perks - underground caves, thermal swimming pools, water reservoir of Liptovská Mara, the archaeological museum, several ruins of castles and museums and galleries. In addition, Liptov beautiful nature attracts many tourists for every year.
